  • Chang-rae Lee: A Gesture Life

This book was recommended to me by Rui. This isn’t the kind of book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is the autobiography of a man who lived through difficult times but managed to keep his head above water. It is very lyrically written, mostly in a backflash style, looking back at this man’s time in the war and the difficult nature of the relationship with his adopted daughter. The book is quite sad, and can get quite disturbing, especially when he describes the situation of comfort women during the war. I wouldn’t have chosen this book for myself, but I’m glad that I read it. The only criticism that I would have to raise is that nothing really happens — and when something does happen, it is a past event, so you can guess how it will turn out.

Once you pick it up, you won’t be able to put it down. If you are looking to fall in love with a book (not to mention a certain character — you’ll see what I mean), this is the one to pick. I think this book might appeal to women more than men, but perhaps someone can prove me wrong?
